Canadian teams have competed in every World Orienteering Championships (WOC) since 1972.

Ted de St Croix (Ottawa) placed 10th in WOC 1985 (Australia) - highest placing by a North American male athlete in a WOC

Sandy Hott Johansen (Smith) placed 9th in the Middle Distance at WOC 2005 (Japan) - highest placing by a North American woman in the WOC

  • Susan Budge (Montreal), competed in WOC 1976 at the age of 15 years and 3 months - the youngest ever WOC competitor.
  • Heather, Sandy, Mike and Wil Smith (Waterside, New Brunswick), were members of the Canadian team at the 2006 World Championships (Denmark) - the first time four members of a family competed in the WOC.
  • Sandy, Mike and Wil Smith (Waterside, New Brunswick) and Cherie and Doug Mahoney (Hillsborough, New Brunswick) was the first time two sets of brothers and sisters had represented a nation at the same WOC (1999).
