How long ago did you start orienteering? 20 years ago
How many WOC’s have you been to? Germany 1995, Norway 1997, Scotland 1999, Finland 2001, Switzerland 2003, Sweden 2004, Japan 2005, Denmark 2006, Ukraine 2007, Czech 2008, Norway 2010
What are your goals this season? It’s a building (house, family) and rebuilding (orienteering) year so I’ll be happy to make a reasonable showing at North American and Canadian Championships, and to start feeling strong and confident in the forest again.
What keeps you motivated to train for the sport? I enjoy the feeling I get when I can stand on the starting line and honestly feel like I can do a top performance on that day.
What is your favourite event? Favorite discipline is middle distance (love the technical aspects), and favorite events are World Championships (often the only times when the maps are so nearly perfect that you can trust them fully and implicitly).
Do you have a pre-race ritual? Not really. If I can manage to get to the start on time and will all the necessary gear, that’s enough.
What’s your best orienteering memory? Cheering my head off in Japan when my sister Sandy raced to an amazing top-10 result at the World Championships.

Which of your 2015 results are you most proud of and why?
Not much to be proud of. Happy to have gotten myself back in to reasonable shape for WOC.
Which race/races are you most excited about for 2016?
Jukola
Where is your favorite place to orienteer in Canada?
Yukon (Long lake)
What race/event is on your orienteering bucket list?
London city race
What do you like to do when you aren’t orienteering? Tell us about one or more of your hobbies/activities.
Music and guitar have taken up more and more time this year.
What are some of your 2016 goals outside of orienteering?
To do some non-orienteering related travel :)
What’s your favourite orienteering discipline and why?
That’s like asking for a favourite child ;)
Tell us about other ways you are involved in orienteering (eg, coaching, mapping, organizing events…)
I do this and that for the club here. Mostly the jobs for “utlänningar”. Competition setup, IT, standing around etc. I do a bit of course-setting and coaching here but did a lot more of that back in Ottawa.
What sort of mental training do you do to improve your orienteering?
Visualization is a powerful tool that I’ve used since I was young. I’d like to try and be more structured and effective with it though and learn to combine it with meditation.
Describe one of your favourite training exercises.
My favourite physical training is hills. Long 3-4min intervals up a single climb. My favourite technical trainings are usually orienteering intervals.
How do you use technology tools or gadgets to enhance your training (software, apps, gps watch, Catching Features, GoPro…)? Tell us about your favourites.
I was a big Catching Features geek. A very effective and fun way of improving fast map reading skills.

When and how did you get involved with orienteering?
Not counting a couple of times in high school gym which, along with Hal Higdon’s “The Electronic Olympics”, got me interested, in the spring of 1990 when I first showed up at a OOC event on the Nepean Sportsplex map.
What do you love most about orienteering?
The evergreen challenge of balancing physical effort and efficient navigation.
What is your favourite orienteering discipline, and why?
Middle, for the sheer enjoyment of doing orienteering that’s as technical as possible (whether I manage to rise to the challenge or not).
Which orienteering event is always on your calendar?
Is this a trick question? Canadian Orienteering Championships!
Do you have an orienteering idol? If so, who and why?

When you’re not orienteering, where can we find you?
Hopefully downtown – usually DC for assorted culture, sometimes Silver Spring for the American Film Institute. Or out training. Sadly, at work might be a better bet other than evenings. What race are you looking forward to in 2019?
I’m thinking of doing the ultimate class at the OO Cup in Slovenia this year. Same difficulty, no trails on the map.
What is your favourite orienteering event that you have done so far?
Probably the WOC Long 2015 in Scotland.
Which map in Canada do you think all orienteers have to try at least once?
Probably the most essential map to try in Canada is the Morningside, around an hour south of Edmonton.
How do you normally prepare for an important race?
Preparing for an important race should really be no different than preparing for an unimportant race. If you prepare for an important race like it is an important race, then you’re not behaving as you race the vast majority of the year. How many important races are there in a year? 2? 3? When do you practice your preparation for a major race? In the unimportant races. A person’s system shouldn’t change just because of the gravity of the situation, it may feel different, but the best athletes are the ones that can perform at the same level whether it’s the Alberta Championships or the World Championships.
So, in summary, I prepare for an important race the same way I do an unimportant race.
What do you like to do outside of orienteering?
I ski a lot, I also teach sport psychology to aspiring young hockey stars. Also, I just collected all 121 in Super Mario Galaxy, so there’s that.
