Did you know?
...that the best ever finish at the World Orienteering Championships by a North American is 9th place. This great result was achieved by Canadian Sandy Hott Johansen in the middle distance race in Japan in 2005.

Info for officials

Let us know if you have suggestions for other things to include. We would like to include course planning tips, so if you know of any great documents/links, let us know.

The COF's competition rules are here.

The IOF's competition rules (updated for 2007) are here. (the last page contains a summary of the changes since the 2004 version).

A list of the pictorial control description symbols are here.

We have course and category guidelines for championship events. These were approved at the 2006 AGM and amended by the COF Board of Directors in March 2009. The old course standards for classic and short are here.

A meet sanctioning request form
The sanctioning request form is available here. Please return this form to the COF as many months prior to the event as possible.

World Ranking Events
Two of Canada's World Ranking Events (WRE) will be at the Canadian Orienteering Championships in Aug 2009. One WRE remains to be allocated. We would like this WRE to be at the senior national team selection race. We do not have a host yet. Is your club interested? Let us know.

Each federation can host up to three World Ranking Events per year (with exceptions for additional WREs when Canada is hosting the NAOCs). There is a service fee of 250 euros/event which the COF will pay. Here is the IOF handbook regarding World Ranking Events. Here is the list of IOF event advisors. The calendar of all world ranking events is available here.

As a general trend, the COF Board would like to see two of the events at the national championships as WRE events and the 3rd WRE to be held at another time of the year. Ideally as part of the national team selection races.

Clubs interested in hosting a WRE in 2009 should inform the COF by mid September 2008. You will need to submit the sanctioning request form.
