Did you know?
...that the best ever finish at the World Orienteering Championships by a North American is 9th place. This great result was achieved by Canadian Sandy Hott Johansen in the middle distance race in Japan in 2005.

Technical Info

Course / Category System for 1997+

This Information and Tables describe the course/category system that was approved by the COF at the November 1996 AGM. (Note the information on this web site is copied from a fax and it has not been officially verified by COF officials).

Features of the new system:

  • "Recommended Course Winning Time" (rather than distance) is the primary factor in determining a course's length; references to distances has been eliminated.
  • Includeds a standard system for contracting down to six courses when this is required
  • 10 year age groups for masters (starting at 35); 3 year age groups for 17-19 year olds;
  • specifies recommended course winning times for each day of a 1 day and 2 day classic race and for short distance races
  • Changes to terminology: the terms "age-based categories" and "other categories" are used (rather than terms such like "competitive", "recreational", and "open".
