Did you know?
...that the best ever finish at the World Orienteering Championships by a North American is 9th place. This great result was achieved by Canadian Sandy Hott Johansen in the middle distance race in Japan in 2005.

Club: Greater Vancouver Orienteering Club (GVOC)
Occupation: Studying at UBC in computer science

How long ago did you start orienteering?
Started at park meets in Vancouver when I was 12

How many WOC’s have you been to?
2005 Japan, 2006 Denmark, 2008 Czech Republic

What is your best WOC result:
36th Sprint - Denmark / 41st Long - Czech

What are your goals this year at WOC?
Focus on making finals and then on running as hard as I can in the final.

What keeps you motivated to train for the sport?
I enjoy training, and I love orienteering (which when the training gets boring keeps me going), I also have a lot of good training buddies!

What is your favourite event?
Long distance, I am a sucker for feeling really good and tired after a long race (and really enjoying a good meal afterwards)

Do you have a pre-race ritual?
mmmmm well I like to eat oatmeal before a race, does that count? And go over and over what I might have forgotten setting out all my clothes in the order I will put them on (only for very important races).

What would be your best orienteering memory?
The beautiful terrain at the Swiss 6 days of orienteering in Zermatt, and the amazing fast terrain in Slovenia. Also, sleeping on the gym floor at O’ringen.
