Did you know?
...that the best ever finish at the World Orienteering Championships by a North American is 9th place. This great result was achieved by Canadian Sandy Hott Johansen in the middle distance race in Japan in 2005.

How long ago did you start orienteering?
I started in 1993

What are your goals for your first WOC:
I have been to numerous summer WOC’s but never a ski-WOC, so I just hope not to get dropped in the mass starts!

Have you been to other international events?
In ski-orienteering, only in the US. I’ve been to several US champs and the Sierra Ski-orienteering week a few times

What is your best result or the one you are the most proud of?
US short distance champs in Lake Tahoe – I had an amazing race and beat everybody, including the men. That was heck of a good feeling!

What keeps you motivated to train for the sport?
I love going fast.

What is your favourite event?
I love them all (yes, even the long distance!)

Do you have a pre-race ritual?
I like to test my wax before breakfast, then I am more calm when it’s time to eat!

What would be your best orienteering memory?
I was at my 1st US ski-o champs in upstate NY. Sharon Crawford was the woman to beat and also known as the person that wouldn’t move out of the way for you! I started after her but caught up on a pretty nasty descent. There was about 20cm of new snow and that descent hadn’t been groomed, so it was really hard to snowplow. Being the kamikaze that I am, I started picking up a LOT of speed – way too much speed as a matter of fact! I was dangerously closing in on her when I started yelling “Sharon, get out of the way” . I was totally out of control. She didn’t budge. The next time I yelled, I am pretty sure she felt my breath down her neck, and I even threw a swear word in there for good measure. This time there was no hesitation, Sharon leaped out of the way, into the snow bank! I won that race!
